Durango, CO: Tri-County Head Start (operated by Durango 4C Council) broke ground for its first newly constructed facility in 50 years that will provide critically needed child care for area residents.

Ground was broken June 6 at 1917 E. 3rd Avenue, directly across from the existing Durango North Head Start Center, and across from the Durango Public Library. Once complete the facility will be able to provide services to 94 children.

“Quality, affordable, and reliable child care is essential to Durango’s workforce and future,” said Lisa Stone, Executive Director of Tri-County Head Start. “This new facility reflects our deep commitment to the children and families of this community. We’re proud to mark this exciting next chapter in our story.”

The project is possible thanks to the dedication of Tri-County Head Start leadership, in collaboration with Tracy Reynolds of Reynolds & Ash Associates, and with vital support from the Regional Head Start Office and the Office of Head Start within the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Additionally, the City of Durango has played a key role by committing to a 30-year land lease at the new site.

FCI Constructors has been selected as the general contractor for the project, bringing decades of experience in building child care and educational facilities across Colorado.

Lily Oswald, a planner with the city’s Community Development Department, said the groundbreaking was a milestone event. “City Council provided clear direction to make the best use of city-owned assets, and this site is a perfect example of that commitment in action,” she said. “Although this was not a city-initiated project, the city is proud to have played a part in making this vision a reality. The partnership with Tri-County Head Start and Reynolds Ash + Associates represents exactly the kind of collaboration that makes our community stronger and provides resources for families who need them the most.”
