About the Project

The City of Durango is seeking community feedback on using automated speed enforcement cameras, or ASEC. They would be a tool to enhance traffic safety by enforcing speeding violations at designated areas within the city. Using automated speed enforcement cameras is a cost-effective way to constantly monitor speeding issues in the areas they are deployed. This eliminates the need for a constant police presence, while effectively deterring dangerous speeding. Studies and reports from other jurisdictions within the state indicate that such measures contribute significantly to lowering average vehicle speeds and minimizing speed-related accidents in the community.

By utilizing lidar technology, ASEC accurately measure the speed of vehicles. When a vehicle exceeds a preset speed limit the system captures an image of the license plate of the vehicle. This photographic evidence is subsequently reviewed and verified by a member of the Durango Police Department. A third-party vendor would then mail a notice of violation to the registered owner of the vehicle along with payment instructions.
