About the Project
The City of Durango Water Distribution and Treatment Divisions are replacing the Rockridge Pump Station, located at the entrance to the Rockridge neighborhood at the corner of Clovis Drive and Borrego Drive in Durango. This pump station was built in 1990 and has reached the end of its useful service life. It is also undersized and lacks the updated communications systems needed for our water system.
This will ensure safe, reliable delivery of drinking water to the Rockridge neighborhood well into the future. It will also allow us to perform necessary maintenance on the Rockridge Tank that supplies water storage, water pressure, and fire protection to the neighborhood.
The pump station will be replaced by a larger, pre-manufactured pump station, consistent with others in our water system. It will include a generator to provide backup power in case of a power outage in the area, and will have a 6-foot tall black security fence around it.
The generator will need to run weekly for a half hour to exercise itself and will take place on Wednesdays at noon. This ensures it works properly should a power outage occur. The noise level of the generator is above the Municipal Code noise ordinance acceptable level even with noise reduction mechanisms in place on the generator. As such, this project may receive a Permit for relief from the Police Department as it is considered critical infrastructure to provide drinking water and fire protection. The expected noise level from 125 feet away (the nearest neighbor) is 68-74 decibels. This is about the same noise level as a vacuum cleaner or a washing machine.
The existing smaller Blue Spruce out front of the pump station will unfortunately need to be removed for this project, but it will be replaced with another tree chosen by the City Arborist. The large Blue Spruce near the street will remain in place and no other trees will need to be removed.
