Speed Enforcement Camera on Animas View Drive

17 April 2026

The Durango Police Department is updating the community on the city’s Automated Speed Enforcement Camera project.

The warning phase began on April 13, 2026, and will run for 30 days. During that period, qualifying violations will result in warnings. The live enforcement phase will begin on May 12, 2026.

Automated speed enforcement is intended to improve traffic safety in areas where speeding puts people at risk. The system uses lidar technology to detect vehicle speed and captures an image of the license plate when a vehicle exceeds the enforcement threshold. Each violation is reviewed and verified before a notice is issued to the registered owner.

The project was informed by public feedback gathered through Engage Durango, as well as traffic safety data and ongoing community concerns about speeding.

The goal is to reduce dangerous speeding and improve safety for everyone using Durango streets, including drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
