Update to the ASEC Project

14 October 2024

Thank you for your continued engagement and feedback on the potential implementation of speed enforcement cameras in Durango. Recently, we experienced a tragic pedestrian fatality, reminding us all that Durango, as a walking and biking community, has no place for speeding within city limits. Speed enforcement cameras would allow our traffic officers to concentrate on more critical issues like DUI and distracted driving, both of which are significant causes of injury and fatality.

We’ve held several discussions with community members, many of whom have requested the installation of speed cameras to enhance traffic safety. Under Colorado law, speed enforcement is a civil matter, helping to recover fines while maintaining due process protections. On the Engage Durango page, we received over 97 comments, 70 of which were unique IP addresses. Among those, 21% were in favor of speed cameras, 21% were neutral, and 55% expressed concerns. In addition, 67 unique IP addresses dropped pins on the map indicating preferred locations for speed cameras. When factoring that input, the overall response shifted to 54.78% positive, 12.02% neutral, and 31.48% negative.

The primary concern raised was "big brother" surveillance. However, it’s important to note that Durango police have been conducting speed studies for years, and many private companies already track individuals through cell phones. Speed cameras only capture the license plates of vehicles that exceed the speed limit. Many negative comments did not consider key information, including the benefits of fair and cost-effective enforcement, increased public awareness, reduced workload for officers, and the general deterrent effect cameras would have on speeding in our city. We believe these measures will contribute to a safer Durango for everyone.

Durango is a walking and biking town, and it’s clear that speeding through a city filled with crosswalks, kids, and animals puts everyone at risk. Even the deer use the crosswalks in Durango. We can all agree that too many bicyclists and pedestrians have been struck by cars. That’s why we’re continuing to explore automated speed enforcement.

While we know some may not fully support this move, our goal is simple: to make Durango’s streets safer for everyone—whether you're walking, biking, or driving. Together, we can protect our community and keep Durango a safe place to live and move.

Thank you for your participation and engagement. We understand that not everyone will agree with every initiative, but we truly value community members' input and willingness to share their perspectives. Your voice helps us move forward together. If you feel strongly about any position and want to speak to the Chief directly, please feel free to reach out to his office and schedule a time to meet or visit on the phone.

Thank you for your input and partnership in keeping our community safe.
